1、Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D.You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1
Questions 1-15 are based on the following passage.
I was only eight years old when the Second World War ended, but I can still remember something about the victory celebrations in the small town where I liveD.(76) We had not suffered much from the war there, though like most children of my age, I was used to seeing bombed houses in the streets and the enormous army lorries passing through. But both at home and at school I had become accustomed to the phrases "before the war" and "when the war's over. Before the war," apparently, things had been better, though I was too young to understand why, except there had been no bombs then, and people had eaten things like ice cream and bananas, which I had only heard of. When the war was over, we would go back to London, but this meant very little to me. I did not remember what London was like.
What I remember now about VE Day was the afternoon and the evening. It was a fine May day. I remember coming home at about five o'clock. My father and mother came in about an hour later. After dinner I said I wanted to see the bonfire ( 篝火), so when it got dark my father took me to the end of the street. The bonfire was very high, and some people had collected some old clothes to dress the unmistakable figure with the moustache (小胡子 ) they had put on top of it. Just as we arrived, they set light to it. The flames rose and soon covered the "guy." Everyone was cheering and shouting, and an old woman came out of her house with two chairs and threw them on the fire to keep the fire going.
I stood beside my father until the fire started to go down, not knowing what to say. He said nothing either. He had fought in the First World War and may have been remembering the end of that. At last he said, "Well, that's it, son. Let's hope that this time it really will be the last one."
Where did the narrator live before the Second World War ?
A.In a small city.
B.In London.
C.In Europe.
D.In the countryside.

2、 What kind of food had the narrator certainly not tasted during the war ?
A.Bread.
B.Butter.
C.Ice cream.
D.Bones.

3、 The unmistakable figure with the moustache most probably represents __________
A.someone who died in the First World War
B.someone who had won the war
C.an imaginary figure
D.the most hated person in the war--Hitler

4、 The narrator's father
A.had fought in the Second World War
B.may have suffered much during the previous war
C.helped build a bonfire on VE Day
D.added something to the fire to keep it going too

5、 By saying "Let's hope that this time it really will be the last one", the father meant that
A.he hoped there would be no more wars in the world
B.he wished the Second World War had not happened
C.he hoped people would build more bonfires
D.he wished people would learn many lessons from the war

6、Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by somequestions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, Cand D.You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the AnswerSheet.
passage1
Questions 6-20 are based on the following passage.
What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it somethingmore than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say“I wish I could help you but I'm short of money myself.”n fact, you are not short of moneybut your friend is in the habit of not paying his debt and you don't want to hurt his feelings byreminding him of this. Is this really a lie ?
Professor Jerald Jellison of the Universityof Southern California has made a scientific studyon lying. (76) According to him, women are better liars thana men, particularly when telling a“white lie,”such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to beparticularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to pofit or gain in some way.
Research has also been done into the way people's behavior changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down atthe time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying, “I wish I were somewhere else now.” They also, tend to touch certain parts of theface more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slightincrease in blood pressure. The tip of the nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increasedpressures make it itch.
Another gesture which gives liars away is what the writer Desmond Morris in his book
Manwatching calls "the mouth cover."(77) He says there are several typical forms of this, such as coveting part of the mouth with the fingers, touching the upper-lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side of the mouth. Such a gesture can be understood as an unconscious attempt on the part
of the liar to stop himself or herself from lying.
Of course, such gestures as rubbing the nose or covering the mouth, or moving about in a chair cannot be taken as proof that the speaker is lying. They simply tend to occur more frequently in this situation. It is not one gesture alone that gives the liar away but a whole number of things, and in particular the context in which the lie is told.
According to the passage, a "white lie" seems to be a lie __________
A.that other people believe
B.that other people don't believe
C.told in order to avoid offending someone
D.told in order to take advantage of someone

7、 Research suggests that women__________
A.are better at telling less serious lies than men
B.generally lie far more than men do
C.lie at parties more often than men do
D.often make promises they intend to break

8、 Researchers find that when a person tells lies__________
A.his blood pressure increases measurably
B.he looks very serious
C.he tends to make some small changes in his behavior
D.he uses his unconscious mind

9、 One reason why people sometimes rub their noses when they lie is that__________.
A.they wish they were somewhere else
B.the nose is sensitive to physical changes caused by lying
C.they want to cover their mouths
D.they are trying to stop themselves from telling lies

10、 The tone of this passage tells us that the writer__________
A.hates to lie
B.enjoys lying
C.often tells a lie
D.tries to analyze lying

11、Questions 11-25 are based on the following passage.
Many of the most damaging and life threatening types of weather, such as torrential rains and severe thunderstorms, begin quickly, strike suddenly, and disappear rapidly, destroying small regions while leaving neighboring areas untoucheD.(79) Conventional (普通) computer models of the atmosphere have limited value in predicting short-lived local storms because the available weather data are generally not detailed enough to allow computers to see clearly the small atmospheric changes that come before these storms. In most nations, for example, weather-balloon observations are taken just once every twelve hours at location typically separated by hundreds of miles. With such limited data, conventional forecasting models do a much better job predicting general weather conditions over large regions than they do forecasting specific local events.
Until recently, the observation-intensive approach needed for accurate, very short range forecasts, or "nowcasts", was impracticable. The cost of equipping and operating many thousands of conventional weather stations was extremely high, and the difficulties involved in rapidly collecting and processing the raw weather data from such a network were beyond overcoming. Fortunately, scientific and technological advance have overcome most of these problems. Radar systems, automated weather instruments, and satellites are all capable of making detailed, nearly continuous observations over large regions at a relatively low cost. Communication satellites can transmit data around the world cheaply and immediately, and modem computers can quickly compile and analyze this large volume of weather information. (80) Meteorologists (气象学家) and computer scientists now work together to design computer programs and video equipment capable of transforming raw weather data into words, symbols, and vivid graphic displays that forecasters can interpret easily and quickly. As meteorologists have begun using these new technologies in weather forecasting offices, nowcasting is becoming a reality.
What is the best title of the passage?
A.Severe Thunderstorms and Damages.
B.Weather Forecasting and Life-threatening.
C.Science Advances and Nowcasts.
D.Available Data and Nowcasts.

12、 Nowcasts are
A.local forecasts
B.short-range forecasts
C.medium-range forecasts
D.long-range forecasts

13、 Nowcasts used to be impracticable because __________
A.there were no conventional computers
B.the cost of the equipping and operating was sky-high
C.there were no difficulties in data processing
D.there were not enough meteorologists

14、 Things have been changed by the following EXCEPT__________
A.the use of radar systems and automated instruments
B.the use of communication satellites and moderu computers
C.the joint work of meteorologists and computer scientists
D.weather information volume is large enough to compile and analyze

15、 The dream ofnowcasts will come true when
A.the cost is lowered
B.people need it to reduce damages
C.meteorologists can make full use of the new technologies
D.conventional weather forecasts are got rid of
